The apparent viscosities of the homologous series of pendulans, extracellular glucan from Porodisculus pendulus, of different molecular weights were measured. The slopes of the lines of the logarithmic plots of viscosity and shear rate tended to be gentle with decreasing molecular weight. Correlation was found between molecular weight and the slope or intercept of the lines. The viscosities were stable over a wide range of pH, but fell sharply in the vicinity of pH 13 and reached equilibrium values after 2 h. After neutralization, the values did not return to the original ones. The viscosities tendend to be affected by temperature with decreasing molecular weight. Correlation was found between molecular weight and the slope or intercept of the natural logarithm of the viscosity-reciprocal of the absolute temperature curve. The logarithmic plots of viscosity against concentration(0.1〜0.5%)gave straight lines. For molecular weights above 1.96×10^5 the slopes of lines were constant, and correlation was found between molecular weight and the intercept.
