Rheological properties of pendulan, an extracellular glucan from Porodisculus pendulus, were investigated. Pendulan was a high-viscosity polysaccharide. The viscosity of pendulan solution was stable over a wide temperature range, insensitive to heating at 120℃ for 30 min or freezing, did not change in the presence of monovalent and divalent cations, and was essentially independent of pH in the range of 2 to 12,but decreased rapidly in the vicinity of pH 13. Pendulan solution showed a sharp drop in viscosity with increasing shear rate, and was classified as a thixotropic fluid.
