A centrifugal blood pump, in which an impeller is supported by a magnetic bearing, is used as a total artificial heart (TAH) because it is smaller and lighter in weight than other TAHs and also causes less damage to blood due to hemolysis and thrombus. However the magnetic bearing hasnit been sufficiently downsized. In this study, a compact and two-DOF controlled magnetic bearing using permanent magnets and electromagnets is proposed and tested. Furthermore, a Helbach array permanent magnet motor is proposed for integration into the magnetic bearing.
