The tunnel current in the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of graphite isnumerically simulated using the bonding and the antibonding orbitals of I-I. as amodel of the tip. The normal image of the triangular lattice is obtained by the bond-ing orbital. But the image by the antibonding orbital is very much distorted; in an ex-treme case, it is the shape of linear chain which is often observed in the actual STM. Itis caused by the special wave function of graphite near the Fermi level and the in-terference of the current contributed by the two tip atoms.
