Band Structures of Periodic Carbon Nanotube Junctions and Their Symmetries Analyzed by the Effective Mass Approximation

The band strtrcttrres of tlue periodic nataottrbe jtrnctions are investigated by the effective l112tSStheory and the tight binding unodel. The periodic.jtrnctions are constructed by introdtncing pairsof a pentagonal defect atad a laeptagonal defect periodically in the carbon n?rnottrbe. We treatthe periodic jtrractiouas cozaaposed by tw'o kitads of' tt?etat11ic nauuottrloes xvitla alnaaost satne radii, tlaeratio of xvlaich is between 0.7 and 1. Tlae disctrssed energy regiora is near the trndoped Ferrnilevel. The energy bands are expressed witla closed analytical forrns by tlae efTectixze mass theory.They are sinailar to the dispersion relation of Kronig-Penny model and coincide well with tlaenurnerical results by the tight binding unodel. The width of the gap and the band are in inverseproportion to tlae length of' the trnit cell. The degeraeracy and reptrlsion lcetween the two bandsare deteruaained only frona synunaetries.
