The Acceptor States in Tellurium

The acceptor states associated with the singular valence band structure of tellurium is investigated theoretically and the optical transitions between these states are discussed. Two acceptor states are distinguished with respect to the H_4 valence band; the bonding state and the anti-bonding state. The binding energies of these states are calculated to be 1.12meV and 0.86meV respectively. The impurity level of the H_5 valence band, which is an internal level, is also investigated and the level width is estimated to be 5×10^<-3>meV. The optical transition between these states is allowed from the bonding level to the internal level when the polarization vector of the light is parallel to the c-axis. The calculated result of the absorption coefficient is in good agreement with the experimental data.
