Broadening of Inter-Subband Transitions in Image-Potential-Induced Surface States outside Liquid Helium

The lineshape and the width of inter-subband transitions are studied in image-potential-induced surface states on liquid 'He surface. The He-gas-atom scatteringand the ripplon scattering are taken into account and the width for the transitionfrom the ground to the first excited subband is explicitly calculated. The obtainedresults are in good agreement with experiments. Effects of a ntagnetic field parallelto the surface are also studied.
