The effect of cooling rate on the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation andon the in-plane structure has been studied by the use of electron diffractionin the second stage SbCl,-graphite intercalation compounds (GIC's). When thecooling rate through the phase transition temperature, 210 K, is fast, a largevolume of the regular spot pattern of (Q7 x V/7)R19' and' (V' 39 x (39)Rl 6'corresrondinu to the hisher temperature rhase remains, while non-neuliniblevolume of the diffuse diffraction pattern of the intercalant corresponding to thelow temperature phase appears. Compared with the case of the slow coolingthrough 210 K, the amplitudes of the dHvA oscillation were found to increasewithout changing their frequencies. Even in the case of slowest cooling, the crystal-line phase pattern remained definitely. These facts have removed such an apparentcontroversy that the glassy phase of the material at low temperature should yieldmany kinds of dHvA oscillation frequencies.
