Stage stability and stage transition in SbCl,-graplaite intercalation compounds havebeen investigated by use of the in situ X-ray diffraction technique. A precise isothermof stage n has been determined for stages up to 6. The stage-stability range in chemi-cat potential Ap(n) is evaluated from the isotherm. A comparison of Ay(n) with thetheoretical results of the electrostatic interlayer interaction motiel gives the ionicity ofI /4<f< l /2 for SbCl,-graphite intercalation compounds. A very narrow two-phaseregion is observed in the stage transition region, in which two single-stage phases coex-ist in thermal equilibrium.
