Viscosity of a Kink in the One-Dimensional φ^4 System

Viscosity of a kink in the one-dimensional cfi' system is investigated. It isgenerated by momentum transfer between the kink and phortons. Mori's formulafor the viscosity is calculated in a form of low tetrtperature expansion, using thecollective coordinate method, in which the kink location is defined as a dynamicalvariable. Calculations up to the order of (k.T)" are perfortned to find that thestatic limit of the viscosity isT (0 :l:: 0) ? O-1224 p 4 ( ! '?'? ? ) '(l) g f 0 (k B T )'>where p, is a displacement at which the cat' local potential is minimum, m massof an ion, l lattice constant, d width of the kink and ctc, characteristic frequencyof the phonons. Relation between the viscosity and diffusion constant is discussedand two mechanisms are pointed out for Brownian-like motion of the kink. Inthe sine-Gordon system, the viscosity of the soliton is shown to be zero up tothe order of (k.T)'.
