High Pressure Effects on the Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization in Mn_<12> Acetate

The efl'ect of high presstrre on the quanturn ttunneling of raaagnetization (QT.NI) in the single-naolecttle naagnet, IVII1]2 ;tcetate (N11112012(O2CCH3)16(1120)4), was sttrdied at 2.4K. As thepresstrre is increased, the QTIVI is strppressed significantly with a slight high-field shift of theresonance field that indicates an incre?rse in the heigltt of the potential barrier between the Lip-and down-spin states. At 21 taaaxiunuuaa pICSSLll'C of' 1.0 GPa, the QTIVI rate decreases by 50%, whilethe resonance field increases by 3.5'll{. The observed presstrre dependence can be qtrantitativelyinterpreted in terraas of' the thermally-activated QTIVI mechanism.
