Quantum Tunneling and Transverse-Field Effect in Magnetic Relaxation of Mn_<12> Acetate Studied by ^<55>Mn NMR

The relaxation time of cluster magnetization was measured at 1.94 K for oriented-powder of Mn_<12>Ac as a function of the transverse field H_x under the fixed longitudinal field H_z. The relaxation of the cluster magnetization, which exhibits a square-root t recovery in the short time regime, decreases with increasing H_x. The relaxation time shows oscillatory behavior at the resonance position of H_z, as compared with rather monotonously dependence at the off-resonance position. This suggests the evidence that the H_x causes the periodical change of tunnel-splitting, thus resulting in the oscillation of the tunneling rate at the avoided crossing.
