The reentrant behaviour (Sm C-Sm C' -Sm C-Sm C') observed experimentallyin an electric field near the chiral smectic C to smectic A phase transition pointis investigated. That curious phenomenon is attribttted to the nonlinear excitationof the turn of the director field in the smectic C phase. Similar behaviour near theLifshitz point in the magnetic field versus temperature plane is also explained bythat excitation.
