Statistical Theory of Smectic A Phase in Hard Rod Fluids

The free energy of smectic A liquid crystalline: phase in perfectly aligned hardcylinders with length L and diameter D is calculated using the third virial approximatuon as a function of the order parameter. The second order phase transition fromlow density nematic phase to high density smectic A phase is fc>und at a packing fraclion 7=0.355 (=7.), where the layer spacing d is d.= 1.35A. Dtte to attractive interactnons, the system can form the smectic phase at a temperaturcr T. by a second orderthermotropic transition even for cases t7< q.. F or such thermolropic smectic A phase,temperature dependences of the layer spacing: (d/d.-I)/(1-T/T.) -10 'and thelayer compression modulus: B - 15 (kT/v,.,)(I - T/ T.) are predicted, where v,..., isthe molecular volume.
