Kink Excitations in Chiral Smectic C Liquid Crystal

A kink of tilt angle in the laelicoidal Sm C' structure is investigated. In thevicinity of the Sm C'-Sm A t?'ansition point, such excitation is mathematicallythe same to that of c/>'-model of double minimum potential. Both excitations ofkink and anti-kink can increase the number of turns in the helicoidal structureand these effects are examined to explain the anomalous temperature-dependenceof pitch observed near the Sm C'-Sm A transition.
