On the Electronic Structure of the Polar Surface of Compound Crystals

To cancel the average bulk macroscopic field compensating charge should beinduced on the polar surface of compound crystals. In this paper we clarify themechanism of the charge compensation by performing the DV-X. calculationson the clusters M..X.. representing the polar surface of the rock-salt type cry-stals. The Mg0 (111) and TiC (Ill) stu'face are chosen as the example of thepolar surfaces of the tonic and covalent crystals, respectively. Peculiar electronicstructures of the polar stu'faces leading to the charge compensation are revealedfor the anion and the cation stu'face of these crystals. Especially metallic characterof the cation surface is found, which is related to the enhanced chemical activitiesof these surfaces.
