Microscopic Evidences of Bipolarons in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductor β-Na_<0.33>V_2O_5

The electronic states of the V" tons in fi-Na....V.O 5 are studied by NMRand EPR measurements. The anomalous temperature dependence of the Knightshift of the "V nuclei in site [ can be understood by the spin singlet ground stateof the electron pairs of the adjacent V" ions (bipolarons). Recent X-ray diffrac-lion measurements reveal that this paired state is accompanied with the smalltonic displacement, as predicted by Chakraverty et at. and the long range orderingof the bipolaronic state in the real space occurs below 200 K. From analyses ofthe anisotropic Knight shift and the quadrtupole interaction, the electron wavefunction of the V" tons in site I is found to be mainly made of the #,.-orbitals.The EPR results show that there are two components of the spin states : thebipolaronic spin singlet and the dilute isolated paramagnetic states.
