EPR Relaxation and Transport Phenomena in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductor β-Na_xV_2O_5

The dynamical behaviors of the 3#-electrons in /7-Na.V.O5 are studied bymeans of EPR relaxation, in the temperature range between 19 and 303 K. Theanisotropy and the temperature dependence of the linewidth are found to orig-inate mainly from the dipolar interaction between the 37-electrons of the excitedstate of the bipolaron at the V. site and the delocalized dilute paramagneticstate at the V. site. The correlation time of the fluctuating local field is estimatedto be of the order of 10-" s. On the basis of this correlation time, the transverseconductivity is found in terms of the diffusive electron hopping motion betweenthe V. and V. sites perpendicular to the chain axis, while the longitudinal one isinterpreted as the collective motion of the bipolaron parallel to the chain axis.
