Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation and Spin Fluctuations in α-Mn by N.M.R.

The temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice (7'.) and spin-spin (7'.)relaxation times in a-Mn metal has been studied for the four different Mn sitesbetween 95 K (7'.) and room temperature by means of cw and pulsed NMRtechniques. The 1/T. for sites I and II estimated from cw NMR Iinewidth wasfound to be almost temr>erature inder>endent as xl.9xI0' (s-"). This highrelaxation rate is interpreted in terms of the existence of localized spin fluctua-tions at sites I and II. The temperature dependence of 17T. for sites III and IVwas found to be 1/T.=0.50Xl0'-l-4.47' (s=') from 120K to room temperature.The first term arises from the localized spin fluctuations at sites I and II viaRKKY type interaction. The second T-linear term is Korringa type relaxationeffect due to the band electron in a-Mu.
