Magnetoresistance in Antiferromagnetic α-Mn Metal

The temperature dependence and the magnetic field dependence of the resistivity ofpolycrystalline c<-Mn metal were measured between 1.3 and 20 K in external transverseand longitudinal magnetic fields of up to 100 kOe. The anomalously large coefficient ofthe T" term in the low-temperature resistivity of a-Mn was found to decreaseappreciably for increase in the applied magnetic fields. These results are interpreted interms of the suppression of spin fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic a-Mn by the highapplied fields. The magnetic field dependence of the resistivity, which was corrected forthe effect of cyclotron orbital motion, is shown to be a linear function of the appliedfields.
