Magnetic Susceptibility and Thermal Expansion of MnSe_2 with Pyrite Structure

The naagnetic susceptibility of MnSez w'ith pyrite structure was nteasured from4.2 K to 473 K. The susceptibility changes discontintuously at the Neel pointT.(47.4 K) and its change ltz is -0.016 in ternas of the maxinat?m. The linearthermal expansion of the polycrystalline sample was measured froxn 20 K to 280 Kby a strain gauge naethod. MnSez contracts discontinuously at T. as it is cooled,which indicates a first order phase transition. The change AL(T.)/L .7. is -6.5 x10-'. On the basis of the asstumptions that exchange interactions vary as -wthpower of inter-tonic distance and that the discontinuous change of the suscepti-bility is due only to the isotropic volume contraction, n is calculated to be 246 fromJ7. and AL(Ty)/Lz73 by molecular field theory. From this extraordinary large valueof n, it is suggested that an anisotropic lattice distortion occurs below T. in Mule..
