The Memory Phenomenon of α Ee_2O_2 Powder Made from Single Crystals

In a previous paper, we have reported that the mory phenomenon of aFe_2O_3 of good single specimens. On the contrary to the case of polycrystalline rystalline spacimens, synthetic single crystals do not show any appreciable recovery of residual magnetization after cooling heating cycles. In order to study the origin of this difference, the dependence of the effect on size of the crystals employed was investigated. Synthesized single crystals which did not show the memory phenomenon were ground down to small pieces and the mean crystal size was determined by an optical microscope. Powder specimens thus produced was packed in a quartz tube, magnetized in a strong magnetic fields (6.4 or 15.O kOe) and the recovery of the residual magnetization after a cooling-heating cycle was measured by an astatic magnetometer. The specimen powders whose average diameter was about 1μ were magnetized by the field of 15.O kOe, since smaller particles were not saturated up to 1O kOe because of their large coercivity.
