X-Ray Diffraction Study on the Low Temperature Phase of Magnetite

X-ray diffraction experiments of a single crystal of magnetite at 84 K werecarried out to investigate the crystal symmetry beloxv the transition tentaperature.A new lattice deformation whicl? makes the crystal syntmetry lower than rhom-bolaedral was clarified. The extra reflections which appear in the low temperaturephase were observed for the first tinae with X-ray difl"raction. Tltc extinction of(4, 4, 8 !-) reflections, which was found by Iizumi and Shirane by means ofneutron diffraction, was also confirmed. All the experimental results can beexplained reasonably by assuming that tlxe low tenaperatu?'e phase of magnetitehas monoclinic synnmetry, and the space group is either Cf -Cc or C'), -C2/c.
