Appearance of Magnetic Moments in Hyperfine Particles of Vanadium Metal

Hyperfine particles (100 to IOOOA) of vanadium were prepared by the evapora-tion naethod and the ma:etic suscertibilit>' of these fine rarticles was measuredin the tenaperature range between l .6 to 300 K. The magnetic susceptibility ofthese fine particles was fotund to consist of two parts, one was the Pauli typewhich was alsp observed in the bulk state of the uvtetal and the other was theCurie-Weiss type overlapping the temperattmre independent one. The C-W cona-ponent of the susceptibility increases with the decrease of particle size as theinverse of average dianteter, stmggesting that the magnetic moment which revealedthe Curie-Weiss type susceptibility originates from the surface region of tlaeparticle, Localization of 3d-electron at the surface of particle is a probable originof the naagnetic monvent.
