Visualization of Chemical Reaction with Aid of Gas Chromatograph : Hydrolysis of Ethyl Acetate

The method of measuring the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in solution of sodium hydroxide by using gas chromatograph was adopted. By this method, the actual reaction can be visually traced as the change in peak height of reactant and product appearing in the chromatogram. As the result, a linear relationship between 1/[(a-b) ln b (a-x)/a (b-x)] and t expressing second-order reaction held as is generally accepted. The activation energy of 9.95 Kcal/mol was also obtained from the inclination of Arrhenius plots in agreement with the Value of litarature.
