Established methods for the analysis of sulfur in organic compounds are both difficult and time consuming. This paper describes an analytical method which is faster, simpler and amenable to automation. Basically this method involves the absorption of the sulfur dioxide produced by burning sulfur containing organic compounds and absorbing the sulfur dioxide in a solution of hydrogen peroxide. The sulfuric acid fromed is then measured by the change in electrical conductivity. The method is specific since only sulfur dioxide formed during the burning of sulfur containing organic compounds will affect the electrical conductivity of the hydrogen peroxide solution. Although nitrogen dioxide is also produced in the burning process, nitrogen dioxide is quickly reduced by sulfur dioxide to nitrogen oxide therefore is not present in the combustion gas mixture.
