Coprecipitation of Divalent Metal Ion with Trivalent Metal Hydroxide in Ammonia Aqueous Solution

It was noted that when an ammonia aqueous solution was added to a mixture aqueous solution of Zn^<2+> ion and trivalent metal ion (Al^<3+>, Fe^<3+> or Cr^<3+>), the Zn^<2+> ion was coprecipitated with the precipitate of trivalent metal hydroxide produced by olation. The pH range of coprecipitation varied with the kind of the trivalent metal ion used. In the solution admixed with Cr^<3+> ion, the coprecipitating amount of Zn^<2+> ion increased with increasing pH value with pH 5 as the most acidic side. With the copresence solution of Al^<3+> and Fe^<3+>, coprecipitation occurred at about pH 6 or higher. In the case of Co^<2+> ion, the coprecipitation occurred in the solutions having Cr^3+, Al^<3+> and Fe^<3+> admixed at pH 4,5.5 and 6 or higher, respectively. The foregoing phenomena of coprecipitation were explained from the surface chemical reaction of the divalent metal ion with the coordinated surface water to the trivalent metal hydroxide.
