To elucidate the properties and activities of cell membranes, rosette formation and phagocytosis by murine and human cancer cells were investigated. 1. Both 3T3 Swiss Albino mouse fibroblasts and 3T3 SV40 transformed Swiss Albino mouse fibroblasts made rosettes with non-sensitized sheep and chicken red blood cells. However, the rosetting capacity of the latter was significantly higher than that of the former. 2. Both human neuroblastoma and gastirc cancer cells made rosettes with non-sensitized sheep and chicken red blood cells. However, the rosetting capacity of the former was significantly higher than that of the latter. 3. Both neuroblastoma and gastric cancer cells, after an incubation at 4℃ for 24 hours followed by an additional incubation at 37℃ for 1 hour, phagocytisized non-sensitized sheep and chicken red blood cells.
