We studied the airway reaction to Sch 1,000 in cases of bronchial asthma to obtain the results as follows. This preparation is useful for mild to moderate attacks in the attacks of bronchial asthma, but its effectiveness is not necessarily great compared with β-stimulating agents. However, this preparation produces no side-effects worthy of note compared with atropine preparations and β-stimulating agents and thus can be used consecutively over a long period of time. It showed a bronchodilatory effect on methacholine-induced bronchospasm. On inhalation of methacholine after the pretreatment by inhalation of this preparation, bronchospasm was apparently inhibited. The bronchospasm inhibitory effect was also noted in the provocation by inhalation of allergen after the pretreatment by inhalation of this preparation. The inhibitory effect of this preparation on the type III reaction appeared to be slightly weaker than that on the type I reaction. Supposing from these findings, this preparation is useful for mild to moderate attacks but is considered to have clinical significance different from that of β-stimulating agents in the sense that it has a prophylactic effect when used in the attack free interval. Though different in the mechanism of action from steroid preparations, this prepearation could possibly help patients withdraw from steroid, so it was considered worthwhile to use this preparation for that purpose depending on the cases. The pretreatment by inhalation of this preparation was able to prevent attacks from appearing in EIA. From the above it was surmised that a prophylactic effect on attacks could be expected of this preparation used continually over a long period of time.
