Influence of stress on IgE antibody formation was studied in primary and secondary responses in mice. To elucidate part of the mechanism of inhibitory influence of stress on immune response, effects of pretreatment with steroid agents and diazepam administration prior to stressing were also investigated. 1. IgE antibody production in primary response was explicitly inhibited by stressing prior to antigen sensitization. However, stressing after antigen sensitization had no effect on IgE antibody production. 2. In secondary response, no influence of stressing prior to secondary immunization was detected. Stressing prior to primary immunization, however, inhibited secondary response remarkably. 3. There was a dose-response correlation between amount of stressing prior to primary immunization and IgE antibody production. 4. Antibody production was moderately inhibited by administration of hydrocortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone prior to primary immunization. 5. Diazepam administration prior to stressing decreased inhibition of antibody production due to stress.
