The levels of plasma cyclic nucleotides (cyclic AMP, cyclic GMP) in 124 patients with bronchial asthma, 49 with various bronchopulmonary diseases and 24 normal individuals were measured using radioimmunoassay method. Various factors relating to the levels of cyclic nucleotides in bronchial asthma were also investigated. Plasma cAMP levels were higher than cGMP levels in normal individuals. Their G/A ratios were 0.15±0.06. Plasma cAMP, cGMP levels and G/A ratios in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis were higher than those in normal individuals. The levels of cAMP, cGMP and G/A ratios in nasal washings after nasal provocation in patients with nasal allergy increased significantly compared with those of cAMP and cGMP, G/A ratio was dicreased, before nasal provocation by specific antigen. In asthmatic patients, plasma cGMP levels during the attack were higher than those in the attack free interval (p<0.01), and plasma cAMP levels in the attack free interval were higher than those in the asthmatic attack. High IgE antibody titers were well correlated with the levels of plasma cyclic nucleotides in asthmatic patients.
