PGF_<2α>-MUM levels in 94 patients with respiratory diseases were measured and the following results were obtained by examining several related factors particularly on bronchial asthma. The average of PGF_<2α>-MUM levels in 24-hour specimens of urine from healthy subjects was 16.24±1.46μg/day in males and 12.13±1.80μg/day in females. The value in males was significantly higher than that in females (p<0.02). Elevation of PGF_<2α>-MUM levels was observed during asthmatic attacks and it was marked in status asthmaticus. However, higher values of PGF_<2α>-MUM were also observed in patients with lung cancer of the lung, bronchiectasis, and there was no significat difference between the levels in these diseases and the levels during asthmatic attacks, this result may suggest a divers participation of PGs in respiratory diseases. Concerning the type of asthma, there was no significant difference between PGF_<2α>-MUM levels in atopic asthma and these in non atopic asthma. On individual patients, however, PGF_<2α>-MUM levels elevated significantly after attacks in both of the types (p;<0.05). A positive correlation (r=0.97,p<0.01) between plasma PGF levels and PGF_<2α>-MUM levels in asthmatics was observed.
