Measurement was made of the blood serotonin levels in 23 healthy subjects, 84 patients with bronchial asthma, 16 patients with other pulmonary diseases, 13 patients with nasal allergy and 8 patients with urticaria for a total of 144 cases and on bronchial asthma in particular, the blood serotonin levels and some correlated factors were studied. The blood serotonin levels in 23 healthy subjects were 0.081±0.021μg/ml, there being no distinctive difference by sex. The blood serotonin levels were 0.108±0.027μg/ml in asthmatic patients, 0.120±0.013μg/ml in patients with nasal allergy and 0.113±0.023 μg/ml in patients with urticaria, these values being evidently higher than those in healthy subjects (p<0.01). In other diseases, however, the blood serotonin levels were higher but not significantly high compared with those in the healthy subjects. By the type of asthma, the blood serotonin levels in the atopic type were evidently higher than those in other types (p<0.01). The blood serotonin levels in asthmatic attack were evidently higher than those in attack free interval. Comparison on the same cases showed evidently higher blood serotonin levels in attack and in wheezing than in attack free interval (p<0.01). The blood serotonin levels in the positive group of skin reaction by allergen were higher than those in the negative group (p<0.001). However, the blood serotonin levels were not correlated with the blood IgE levels and blood histamine levels. The blood serotonin levels in Groups I and II of CMI test were higher than those in Groups III and IV (p<0.02), but the blood serotonin levels were not correlated with the results of Yatabe-Gilford's test. As for the changes in the blood serotonin levels by therapy, the blood serotonin levels tended to fall following administration of β-stimulants and corticosteroid preparations. However, no change was induced in the blood serotonin levels by specific hyposensitization and gold therapy.
