The nature, classification and the mechanism of generation of the lung sounds are reviewed and studied. Adventitious sounds originated from the lung are devided into two groups, one is continuous sounds and the other is discontinuous sounds. The nomination of the rales is still under controversial, however, unification of the terminology will be established in the near future. Generally speaking, the smaller the airway, the higher the frequency of the lung sounds. Continuous sounds are musical and constructed by smooth waves having a long duration, on the other hand, discontinuous sounds are non-musical, explosive and constructed by a puls-like waves having short duration according to the time-expanded wave form analysis.
