Effects of Low or High Sodium Diet in Stroke-prone Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

Effects of low or high sodium diet (0.079% Na or 4.360% Na, respectively) on blood pressure, incidence of stroke and hypertensive vascular lesions were observed in SHRSP of both sexes from 5 or 12 weeks of age. 1. Hypertension in SHRSP developed with ingestions of the low sodium diet. 2. The low sodium diet was not effective in the retarding of the development of hypertension, but was somewhat, however not markedly effective for the prevention of stroke and the elongation of life span in SHRSP. 3. The high sodium diet accelerated the development of hypertension in SHRSP, sustained a further increase of blood pressure following their normal spontaneous increase, enhanced their incidence of stroke and shortened their life span, similar to the effects of salt in drinking water. 4. Due to ingesting the high sodium diet, hypertensive vascular lesions were found in the brain and kidneys, but not in other organs, as early as at about 10 weeks of age. 5. Water intake significantly increased immediately after high sodium diet ingestion.
