Penetration of the epithelial layers of the mouse intestine by oncospheres of Hymenolepis nana was studied with the light and transmission electron microscopes. Hatched and activated oncospheres penetrated the intestine and attained the lamina propria within 30 min after injection of shell-removed eggs into the intestinal segments. Oncospheres entered the middle portion of the villi and penetration through the epithelium resulted in the destruction of several adjacent epithelial cells. It is suggested that the host tissue damage in this area was the result not only of scratching movement of the oncospheral hooks, but also of cytotoxic or cytolytic activity of the penetration gland secretion. The findings suggested that the oncospheres released their secretory materials continuously during penetration. Infiltration of eosinophils around the oncospheres entering the lamina propria was noted.
