The kinetics of IgG1 and IgG2a hypergammaglobulinemia in the sera of male ddY mice infected with Hymenolepis nana eggs was examined by the radial immunodiffusion method. The amount of IgG1 gradually increased after initial infection, reached a peak at 5 weeks after infection, and high levels persisted thereafter. The IgG2a levels rose slowly with a peak response at 5 weeks after initial infection, and then fell back to a nearly normal level during the next week. The challenge infection with H. nana eggs in these chronically infected mice resulted in a transient rise and a subsequent fall in the levels of both IgG1 and IgG2a, a peak response being observed at 1 week after challenge infection. When mice were treated with two oral doses of praziquantel at an early stage of initial infection, there was no obvious change in the levels of IgG1 and IgG2a. Again, the challenge infection in the medicated mice gave rise to a transient increase in the IgG1 and IgG2a levels that peaked 3 weeks after challenge infection. A marked anamnestic response, especially that observed in the medicated mice, suggested that the lgG1 and IgG2a hypergammaglobulinemia in response to H. nana infection in mice had a close correlation with the protective immunity in this host-parasite system.
