A possible relationship between the protective immunity to Hymenolepis nana infection and the eosinophilic response of mice was studied by the passive transfer experiments. Male ddY mice passively immunized with either immune mesenteric lymph node cells (IMLNC) or antisera were highly resistant to the challenge infection with H. nana eggs. A more striking resistance was observed with the inbred strain of BALB/c mice passively protected with IMLNC. The eosinophilic responses in the intestinal villi and the peripheral blood of these mice were determined by the routine histological and hematological techniques. The results indicated that there were no local nor peripheral eosinophilic responses comparable to those observed in the mice actively immunized and challenged with H. nana eggs. It was suggested that the effective killing of the challenge larvae by IMLNC or antibodies did not always require the cooperation of eosinophils.
