We investigated the magnetic properties of nanoscale ferromagnetic boards with uniaxial anisotropy by using mean field analysis, ground state calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the magnetization process heavily depends on the surface size and it is induced by the formation of the magnetic domains. Flexible stripelike domains appeared just below the transition temperature and grew into stripe or quadrant domains. In small surface systems, only stripe domains survived in the cooling process. In large surface systems, both stripe and quadrant domains survived. We discuss these phenomena on the basis of domain wall trapping.
