The extraction process of zirconium-95 from hydrochloric acid solutions tribenzylamine is shown by the following reactions:<BR>ZrCl62-+2RCl\rightleftharpoonsR2ZrCl6+2Cl-<BR>followed by the reaction of the above species with TBA-Cl in a chloroform solution:<BR>R2ZrCl6+2RCl\rightleftharpoonsR2ZrCl6·2RCl<BR>The main extractable species of zirconium, ZrCl62-, is formed from the zirconyl ions:<BR>Zr(OH)2Cl<I>n</I>(2-<I>n</I>)++2H++(6-<I>n</I>)Cl-\rightleftharpoonsZrCl62-+2H2O<BR>On the basis of the present results and of previously reported data on niobium extraction, some information with respect to the optimum conditions for the separation of zirconium and niobium have been given.
