The surface binding energy of nickel was estimated from the measured velocity-distribution function of sputtered nickel atoms by rapid-frequency-scan laser spectroscopy, yielding $1.2\pm 0.5$ eV, which was about one third of the sublimation energy of nickel. The results were interpreted as the formation at the surface of a carbide phase which weakened the binding of atoms, compared with that in pure nickel.
