Operational Characteristics of a Tunable Single-Mode Injection-Locked TEA CO_2 Laser

A high-power, tunable, single-mode TEA CO_2 laser has been developed using injection-locking for the pumping source of a submillimeter laser. A tunability of over 1.5 GHz around the line center has been achieved with an output energy of 30 J, by using an etalon-tuned TEA CO_2 laser as an injection source. In addition, the injected operation showed suppression of the gain-switched spike of the usual free-running TEA CO_2 laser, and yielded an elongation of the pulse duration up to 500 ns (FWHM). A simple model describing the temporal properties of tunable injection-locked operation is presented, and the estimated tunable range based on the model is in good agreement with the experimental result.
