The gel-to-liquid-crystalline phase transition of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicle membrane was observed in the presence of urea, ethylurea, and butylurea by monitoring the scattered light intensity of the vesicle suspension. Urea showed no significant effect on either the transition temperature, <I>T</I><SUB>m</SUB>, or the transition width, <I>W</I>, whereas ethylurea and butylurea depressed <I>T</I><SUB>m</SUB> without affecting <I>W</I>.
