The gel-to-liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature of a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicle membrane was measured in the presence of polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers (C<I>n</I>E<I>m</I>) of various chain lengths of hydrophobic (<I>n</I>) and hydrophilic (<I>m</I>) groups. All of the surfactants, except of C12E1, depressed the transition temperature almost linearly with the concentration. The depression of the phase-transition temperature was analyzed by applying the van't Hoff model for the freezing-point depression; also, the partition coefficients of the surfactants between bulk water and the membrane phase were estimated. Discussions were given concerning the dependence of the partition coefficients on the chain lengths of both oxyethylene and alkyl groups.
