Thermally excited orientational fluctuations are measured ima the liquid crystal nearthe reentrant nematic-smectic A phase transition, using Rayleigh light scatteringtechnique. Twist and bending modes show a critical enhancement, while the splaymode remains unchanged, as the transition temperature is approached. Its criticalbehavior is found to be compatible with a mean field theory but not with a dynamicscaling theory.
