Cluster Synchronization in a Chemical Oscillator Network with Adaptive Coupling

We investigate the dynamics in the two-dimensional array of active elements with adaptive coupling, where elements are prepared by localizing the Belousov--Zhabotinsky reaction in a gel matrix. The adaptive scheme is achieved by the feedback in such a way that the coupling is strengthened and weakened according to a phase difference of a pair of oscillators. We find that the proposed scheme is effective in enhancing two- and three-cluster synchronizations depending on the parameters of the adaptation function. Experimental results are approximately reproduced in a numerical simulation with a forced Oregonator reaction-diffusion model.
