A Non-Linear Analysis of the Williams Domain Mode in Nematic Liquid Crystals

The electrohydrodynamic convection is studied theoretically in an infinitenematic medium of the planar alignment under a sinusoidal electric field. A non-linear time-dependent equation for the director distortion is derived with aone-diunensional treatment. Solving this equation numerically under a periodicboundary condition, the followings are described: i) the growth of the directordistortion due to sudden application of the electric field above threshold andii) the distortion distribution and the flow velocity distribution in the steadyconvective state. It is found that the present approach is useful to understand thebehavioturs of the system under the electric field above threshold.
