X-Ray Study of Thermal Parameters of NH_4H_2PO_4 and ND_4D_2PO_4 in the Paraelectric Phase

Thermal parameters of P and N atoms of the antiferroelectric Nl-I.H.PO. (ADP)and the deuterated isomorphous ND.D.P0. (DADP) have been observed as a funcLion of temperature in the paraelectric (PE) phase. The thermal parameters U';. andU' fb hA dh l'd " ' "o ot DP an DADP s ow unear temperature-depen ence nnducatung posutnveintercepts at T = O K and the values of intercept for DADP are larger than those forADP. The parameter U X', of DADP also has a positive intercept at 0 K in contrastwith that of ADP which becomes zero as T=O K. By the comparison with the structural data of the potassium salts (KH.P0. and KD.PO.) reported by Nelmes et al., itis concluded that the dipole moment of the ammonium ions polarized along the a(b)axis plays an essential role in the antiferroelectric phase transition.
