Effects of the Electron-Hole Interaction on the Giant Quantum Attenuation and Velocity Change of Sound Waves in Pyrolytic Graphite

The sound attenuation and velocity change in pyrolytic graphite have beensimultaneously measured as a function of the temperature, frequency and magneticfield intensity. It has been found that both the attenuation coefficient and thevelocity change are greatly enhanced when some electron and hole Landaulevels cross simultaneously the Fermi level at a certain field. The interrelationbetween the enhancement rate in the attenuation coefficient and that in thevelocity change is reasonably explained in terms of the electron-hole correlationinteraction proposed by Kuramoto. There remains, however, unexplained, asfor the experimental results of rather strong temperature dependence of bothquantities and weak frequency dependence of the velocity change.
