Some Anomalies in Magnetoacoustic Attenuation in Bismuth

The occurrence of a peak at a characteristic temperature T. in the plot of thesound attenuation coefficient ox,(T, f H,) against the temperature T was reinvesti-gated in detail. Here H, is a certain specified peak position of a(T, f, H) versusH curve. Main experimental results are as follows. (i) T. appears only in the caseof simultaneous absorption of phonons due to electrons and holes. (ii) The 3/4Width AHsx+ of ct(T,f, H) versus H curve for the overlarred r>eaks shows aminimum at Tx T. as a function of T. (iii) In the neighborhood of T? T., theattenuation curve becomes of a cusp-shape in the very neighborhood of H - H,.It is pointed out that any existing theories of the magnetoacoustuc attenuatmonin normal semimetals can not at all explain the above experimental results.
